The International Hillclimb Cup starts this weekend at the Bieszczadzki Wyscig Górski Sanok-Zaluz in Poland. The event also counts towards a number of other championships like the European Historic Hillclimb Championship and the Polish and Slovak Championships. A record number of 111 drivers is expected this year.
Vaclav Janik is hoping to defend his title in Category II this year. Competition in the sportscars comes from his countryman Petr Vitek. Slovak driver Tomas Ondrej is participating in Zaluz for his national championship. His Tatuus PY012 is entered in the singleseaters but that is probably a mistake. If Ondrej is in the sportscars then there are 3 drivers and maximum points. Janiks teammate Jiri Svoboda is entered in the old Lola B02/50.
Category III appears to be the only category with actual competition this season. With Nikolay Zlatkov, Ronnie Bratschi and Karel Trneny there are three drivers aiming for the Cup victory. They will have their hands full in Zaluz as almost every Polish driver is eligible for Cup points.
In Category I Reinhold Taus is the only foreign driver participating. His Polish and Slovak rivals in Group A are not eligible for points so Taus should have no problem securing victory.
Igor Drotar and “Dubai” are competing in both the Slovak and the Polish Championships this year. In both championships their biggest rivals are driving Skoda Fabia S2000 cars. In Poland Waldemar Kluza is defending his title while in Slovakia Veroslav Cvrcek will compete in a similar machine.
