The Canary Islands Hillclimb Championship ended this weekend on Fuerteventura with the Subida a Betancuria. The organisers have great ambitions judging from the fact a representative of the RFEDA was present to judge the event.
They also invited one of the top drivers in Spain to compete. No other than Andrés Vilariño himself made the very long travel to Fuerteventura with his new and updated Norma M20 FC sportscar. The car apparently has great specifications and should be among the best in Europe. Sadly no one got to see it as an electrical problem grounded the Norma just a few metres after the start of first practise.
With Vilariño out of the running the regular competitors could now challenge for victory. No CM prototypes were at the start as José Manuel Gonzalez had already secured the championship some races ago. The new touringcar champion, Enrique Cruz, was present but without his Porsche 997 GT3. Instead he fielded a Volkswagen Polo with which he finished a decent seventh overall. Modesto Martin had the race for himself and the Porsche 996 GT3 pilot took an easy victory. Antonio Suarez debuted his new Porsche 997 GT3 which was previously used by José Antonio Aznar. Suarez quickly adapted to his new car but a clutch problem in the second race put him back in third overall. Ivan Armas (BMW M3 E30) could benefit to take over second place overall.
