Eschdorf lies in the northern half of Luxembourg. This part of the small country is called the Ösling. Considered geologically as part of the Ardennes, it is characterized by dense forests and highlands of 400-500m above sealevel. They were formed in the Paleozoic Era hundreds of millions years ago when tetonic plates shifted together. In the present day the highlands have deep cuts made by the rivers. Near Eschdorf it is the Sauer River and its small subsidaries that formed the landscape. Just north of Eschdorf a large dam creates an artificial lake called Lac de la Haute Sûre, which is responsible for almost 70% of the fresh water supply in Luxembourg. The lake is the centre point of the Obersauer Nature Park. Of course the first objective of a national park is to protect the enviroment. But the Obersauer National Park is also perfectly tailored for tourists. It has the hotels, transportation and infrastructure are all aimed at visitors who like to enjoy the nature. A large amount of walking trips are set out in the area and the lake can be used for watersports.
The Ösling is sparsely populated. It is filled mostly by little towns like Eschdorf with only a few hundred inhabitants. Some villages are built in the valleys and reach up against the hillsides. One beautiful example can be seen just north of Eschdorf at Esch-sur-Sûre. This small hamlet is built below ruins of an old fortress in a meander of the Sauer river. Esch-sur-Sûre also houses the Naturepark’s Visitor Center.
